Province Overview

  • Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) is one of Indonesia’s livestock production centers, the province is home to the fourth-highest cattle population in the nation.
  • NTB has extensive land availability, an example of which is a production forest of 437,440 Ha, currently owned by the state and used for livestock grazing.
  • NTB serves the cattle market in other provinces, the most to Java Island, and does not conduct any cattle import activity from other provinces.
  • NTB is integrated into one of the national Sea Highway (Tol Laut) routes specifically for cattle, with a minimum of 500 head per shipment using the Camara Nusantara livestock vessel. The target markets are mainly cities in Java and Sulawesi.
  • Aside from the cattle industry, NTB is also well-known for its agriculture, forestry, and fishery, which have also been major contributors to NTB's provincial GDP.
  • Domestic Investment Realization in NTB reached USD 0.47 Billion while the Foreign Investment Realization reached USD 0.3 Billion in 2020.

    NTB is one of the largest cattle producing provinces in Indonesia, with the fourth largest cattle population in the country. The high land availability in this province makes it possible to develop open grazing models and implement natural breeding methods. Corn grains and lamtoro, which are feed options with the ability to increase cattle performance, are abundant in the area.

    1. Commercial feedlots are legal business entities with the purpose of increasing the weight of the cattle (BPS, Large and Small Livestock Establishment Statistics 2020)
    2. Commercial breedlots are are legal business entities which focus on raising livestock to breed and produce new, young livestock with inherited traits (BPS, Large and Small Livestock Establishment Statistics 2020)
    3. Smallholders are small-scale cattle businesses, usually family owned, with varying cattle number per household. The average smallholder farmers' ownership in Indonesia is about 2 to 5 cattle per household, but it can reach 20 to 50 cattle per household in regions which cattle farming are a main source of livelihood, such as NTB and NTT (BPS STU 2014)
