Province Overview

  • West Kalimantan is a province with a relatively small cattle population compared to other major cattle breeding provinces in Indonesia.
  • The palm oil industry plays a significant role in West Kalimantan, with plantations occupying a substantial area. This presents an opportunity to integrate cattle breeding and utilize palm oil byproducts as feed, potentially reducing production costs.
  • Domestic Investment Realization in West Kalimantan reached 9.3 trillion IDR while Foreign Investment Realization reached USD 0.7 Billion in 2022.
  • While West Kalimantan has several ports, the main port that is currently utilized for cattle transport activities is Pontianak seaport.
  • Despite the smaller cattle population, West Kalimantan has potential for growth in the cattle breeding sector due to the availability of land suitable for grazing and the increasing demand for beef within the province. However, improvements in infrastructure and the overall value chain are crucial to support a larger-scale breeding industry.

Stories from the Field

Success Story

  • West Kalimantan is Ready to Implement SISKA to Accelerate Sustainable Palm Oil Plantations

The West Kalimantan Provincial Government is proactively promoting oil palm-cattle integration (SISKA) through outreach and workshops. A workshop featuring experts discussed various aspects of SISKA, from national policy to best management practices. SISKA is considered strategic for West Kalimantan as it can increase cattle population, ensure food security, provide organic fertilizer, and create jobs. The workshop emphasized the importance of proper SISKA management and collaboration between various stakeholders to achieve sustainability within the program and the palm oil industry in West Kalimantan.

Lesson Learned

  • Monitoring and Evaluation Technical Guidance (Monev Bimtek)

The Indonesia-Australia Red Meat and Cattle Partnership (IARMCP) and SISKA Supporting Program (SSP) conducted routine monitoring and evaluation of the SISKA MEMBARA clusters in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan. The evaluation aimed to assess the program's progress and design a better strategy to improve the welfare of livestock farmers. Several important points were identified, including the need for electric fences to control cattle, the importance of superior breeding bulls, and the necessity of training for livestock management. Collaboration between various stakeholders from the government, private sector, and academia is crucial for the program's continued success.

Definitions

  1. Commercial feedlots are legal business entities with the purpose of increasing the weight of the cattle (BPS, Large and Small Livestock Establishment Statistics 2022).
  2. Commercial breedlots are legal business entities which focus on raising livestock to breed and produce new, young livestock with inherited traits (BPS, Large and Small Livestock Establishment Statistics 2022).
